New Nematode-resistant Grape Rootstocks are Nearing Release

چکیده
– 8 – In 1993 and 1994, many crosses were made with the goal of developing rootstocks with broad and durable nematode resistance, while improving horticultural characters such as rooting ability and shoot length. The parents of these crosses included a number of grape species known to be highly resistant to both root-knot and dagger nematodes. They included several forms of Vitis arizonica, V. candicans, V. champinii, V. cinerea, V. rufotomentosa, and Muscadinia rotundifolia. Vitis riparia and V. rupestris were used in the crosses to improve rooting. About 75 crosses were made, leading to the establishment of over 5,000 seedlings in the vineyard. In 1996 these plants were evaluated for shoot growth, internode length, and the presence of laterals. One thousand selections were chosen, and that winter they were tested for their ability to root from dormant two-node cuttings. The best 100 were advanced to nematode testing.

Title: “A technique for screening grape germplasm for resistance to Meloidogyne incognita”
Breeding programs aiming at developing new nematode-resistant rootstocks are important because current rootstocks with adequate nematode resistance tend to have other undesirable viticultural characteristics (excessive vigor, excessive potassium uptake, poor resistance to phylloxera, rooting difficulty, inadequate zinc absorption). In this paper the authors develop a technique for evaluating re...
متن کاملPenetration and development of Meloidogyne arenaria on two new grape rootstocks.
Penetration, development, and reproduction of a virulent 'Harmony' population of Meloidogyne arenaria was studied on two nematode-resistant grape rootstocks 10-17A and 6-19B. 'Cabernet Sauvignon' was used as a susceptible control for comparison. Plants were inoculated with 100 freshly hatched second-stage juveniles (J2) of M. arenaria. Greater numbers of J2 penetrated roots of 'Cabernet' than 1...
متن کاملFour Biotypes of Tylenchulus semipenetrans in California Identified, and Their Importance in the Development of Resistant Citrus Rootstocks.
Four biotypes (pathotypes) of the citrus nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans, occurring in California, U.S.A. were differentiated on the basis of differences of infectivity on 'Homosassa' sweet orange, 'Troyer' citrange, 'Pomeroy' and 'Rubidoux' Poncirus trifoliata, 'Thompson Seedless' grape, and 'Manzanillo' olive. A method for differentiating biotypes of T. semipenetrans is described. Field o...
متن کاملSoil Temperature Effects on the Interaction of Grape Rootstocks and Plant-parasitic Nematodes.
Resistance to Meloidogyne spp. in commonly used resistant grape rootstocks is slightly compromised at soil temperatures above 27°C. Newly released UCD-GRN series rootstocks, which have broad nematode resistance, exhibit trace infections by Meloidogyne spp. at elevated temperature. Pathotypes of M. incognita and M. arenaria that are virulent on 'Harmony' rootstock, as well as M. incognita Race 3...
متن کاملVirulence of Meloidogyne spp. and Induced Resistance in Grape Rootstocks.
Harmony grape rootstock displays resistance to several Meloidogyne spp. but that resistance is not durable in commercial vineyard settings. A 2-year experiment in a microplot setting revealed host specificities of two virulent populations of Meloidogyne arenaria and an avirulent population of Meloidogyne incognita. In a subsequent split-root experiment, the avirulent nematode population was dem...
